BEQUIA EASTER REGATTA
Each year around the Easter holidays, there is a heighten atmosphere in the beautiful Grenadines Island of Bequia as the Easter regatta approaches. This highly anticipated event which attracts Sailors from across St Vincent and the Grenadines, the Caribbean, Europe and the US to compete in this very prestigious event on the sparkling water around the island. This Regatta is known to be the largest in the region and also attracts many visitors from around the world.
The Bequia Easter Regatta is organised by the Bequia Sailing Club, whose main aim is to encourage and promote sailing skills in every type of craft, and to ensure that Bequia Easter Regatta maintains its reputation as the best small-island regatta in the southern Caribbean. They are support by a number of reputable businesses on the island, one of which is the Frangipani Hotel where the Regatta headquarters are located. The Easter Regatta is Bequia’s largest yearly event and one of Bequia’s most popular and lively long weekends. This is truly a spectacular event as small colorful sailing boats hand built on the island, as well as yachts of all sizes and colours participates in various races around Bequia for four eventful days. There are different classes of races you can get involve with, But it’s the indigenous double-enders from Bequia and other Grenadine islands that remain the stars of this very special annual event, attracting huge crowds of spectators from start to finish.
In addition to the boat races there are lots of other family fun activities to keep you entertained during your stay, the whole family can get involve in the traditional Lower Bay beach splash on Easter Sunday with beach games, a sand castle competition, a crazy craft race, or even race your own model boat and show cases your artistic flare. Many people also share activities for all ages under the almond tree in Port Elizabeth on Easter Monday along with a tradition BBQ.
